High representative meets with UK MPs and Lords

Karwan Jamal Tahir, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) High Representative to the United Kingdom, attended a dinner with several members of the UK Parliament and the House of Lords to discuss current developments in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and broader regional dynamics.

During the evening engagement, High Representative Tahir expressed his deep appreciation for the longstanding support extended by British lawmakers to the Kurdistan Region. He provided an in-depth briefing on the political, economic, and security landscape, highlighting key challenges facing the region amid ongoing tensions with the federal government in Baghdad.


Discussions focused on a range of pressing issues, including the federal budget and its implications for public sector salaries in the Kurdistan Region, the continued delay in implementing Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution, and the unresolved status of disputed territories. Mr Tahir also addressed matters concerning oil and gas management, the role and integration of Peshmerga forces, and the broader peace and security efforts across northern and western Kurdistan.


Underscoring the importance of UK engagement, he urged attending lawmakers to encourage their government to play a more active role in facilitating dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad. He also called for stronger economic and diplomatic ties between the United Kingdom, the Republic of Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region.


“The Kurdistan Region remains a pillar of stability in an increasingly volatile region,” Tahir said, stressing the KRG’s ongoing commitment to combating terrorism and promoting peace.


Participants engaged in a candid and constructive dialogue, posing questions on issues of shared interest and reaffirming their support for the Kurdistan Region. Many expressed a desire to see the UK further strengthen its partnership with the KRG in the years ahead.
