KRG High Representative Meets UK ambassador to Baghdad to Discuss Bilateral Ties and Regional Stability

The Kurdistan Regional Government representative to the United Kingdom, Karwan Jamal Tahir, met with Irfan Siddiq, the UK Ambassador to Iraq, for talks focused on regional developments and bilateral cooperation. David Hunt, Head of the Iraq and Yemen Section at the British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) also participated in the meeting.

During the discussion, Tahir briefed the British officials on the current political and security situation in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region. He emphasised the importance of the longstanding partnership between the Kurdistan Region and the United Kingdom, highlighting collaboration across multiple sectors.


Mr Tahir also addressed ongoing disputes between Erbil and Baghdad, calling on the UK to support efforts to resolve these issues within the framework of the Iraqi federal constitution.

Both sides stressed the need for continued cooperation to strengthen relations between the Kurdistan Region and the UK, while also contributing to improved ties between Erbil and Baghdad. Stability and security in the broader region were identified as mutual priorities.

The UK Ambassador expressed optimism that Erbil and Baghdad could reach a durable political agreement that addresses their differences in line with the constitution, while reinforcing joint efforts to uphold regional stability.

The meeting also touched on trade relations and cooperation under the existing Joint Trade Priorities Agreement (MoU) between the UK and the Kurdistan Region. Both parties underscored the importance of political unity within the Kurdistan Region and expressed support for the swift formation of a new KRG cabinet.
