The European- Atlantic Group hosted an event at the House of Commons for the KRG High Representative to the UK, Karwan Jamal Tahir to brief the members of the Kurdistan Independence Referendum which is scheduled to take place on Monday 25th September 2017. This event was introduced by Mr Charles Bennett, Director of the European-Atlantic Group and was hosted by Mary Glindon MP, Vice Chair of All the Party-Parliamentary Group on Kurdistan.
Mary Glindon MP addressed the audience on the inspiration of Kurdish people to hold referendum. She said: “it is important to send information about the proposed referendum and get support from the UK for people in Kurdistan in order to go ahead with this important day.”
Mr Tahir delivered remarks, underlining the long history of Kurdish struggle, the KRG’s role in Post-Saddam Iraq and the Kurdish drive for self-determination. He said : “ We must reflect back on the history of Iraq in order to understand the Kurdish struggle. The History has proven this reality; the responses from consecutive regimes in Iraq to our legitimate rights were always: Denial, prosecution, abduction, torture, belittled and finally genocide against our peaceful nation. The Halabja chemical bombardment and Anfal operation was the last resort of the Iraqi regime to wipe out the Kurdish nation. Nonetheless we have survived because of our determination and aspiration for the right to self-determination.”
Mr Tahir stated that the Kurdistan Regional Government will be holding the upcoming referendum for independence with the aim of securing a democratic mandate to negotiate the outcome with the Iraqi Federal Government in a peaceful manner.
At the event, the questions and discussions also focused on the implication of Kurdistan Referendum, the future of Middle East boundaries, the KRG-Baghdad relations and the question of energy security in Kurdistan.
The event was attended by diplomats, academics, journalists, business representatives and members of the European-Atlantic Group.
